Tanzania is renowned for its incredible diversity of forests, which play a crucial role in maintaining the country’s ecological balance and supporting its rich biodiversity. These forests range from lush tropical rainforests and montane woodlands to dry deciduous forests and coastal ecosystems, each hosting unique flora and fauna. They provide essential resources such as timber, medicinal plants, and food, and are vital for the livelihoods of many local communities. Additionally, Tanzania's forests are significant for conservation efforts, serving as habitats for endangered species and playing a role in climate regulation.
Tropical Rainforests

Kilimanjaro Rainforest
Location: Found on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, part of Kilimanjaro National Park.
The Kilimanjaro rainforest features a variety of unique plant species, including giant heathers, tree ferns, and various orchids. It serves as a critical habitat for many animals, including the endangered Abbot's duiker, various monkeys, and over 200 bird species, such as the Kilimanjaro stuhlmann's sunbird.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Location: Situated in the Eastern Arc Mountains in southern Tanzania
This park is known for its exceptionally high levels of endemism. Over 400 species of plants, as well as many unique animals, can be found here, including the Udzungwa red colobus monkey and the endangered Sanje mangabey. The forest is also rich in butterflies, amphibians, and a variety of bird species

Amani Nature Reserves
Location: East Usambara Mountains, Tanga Region.
Hosts a unique array of flora and fauna, including the African violet, a globally beloved houseplant, and rare Usambara weavers. The reserve protects over 500 butterfly species and 300 bird species, making it one of Tanzania’s most biodiverse regions.

Mahale Moutains National Park
Location: Western Tanzania, bordering Lake Tanganyika.
The park is home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Tanzania, along with 8 other primate species, leopards, and over 200 bird species. The park also houses unique aquatic species in Lake Tanganyika.
Montane Forests

Minziro Forest Reserve
Location: Kagera Region, near the Uganda border.
A unique semi-deciduous forest, Minziro is home to migratory birds from Central Africa, various butterfly species, and some forest-dwelling mammals, including monkeys and antelopes.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Highland Forest)
Location: Northern Tanzania, surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater.
The highland forests in this area support rare species like the mountain reedbuck, leopards, and hundreds of bird species, such as the golden-winged sunbird.

Mount Meru Forest
Location: Surrounding Mount Meru, near Arusha National Park
The forest is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including endemic primates like the black-and-white colobus monkey, as well as numerous bird species such as the mountain buzzard and various sunbirds.

Usambara Mountain
Location: Located in northeastern Tanzania
This area is rich in endemic species, including the Usambara violet and various rare birds, such as the Usambara eagle-owl. The forests also support diverse mammals, butterflies, and unique plant life.
Miombo Woodlands Forests

Rungwa - Kizigo - Muhesi
Location: Kagera Region, near the Uganda border.
A unique semi-deciduous forest, Minziro is home to migratory birds from Central Africa, various butterfly species, and some forest-dwelling mammals, including monkeys and antelopes.

Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)
Location: Southern Tanzania, spanning parts of Rufiji and Morogoro regions.
Tanzania’s miombo woodland harbors large herds of elephants, rare African wild dogs, and river ecosystems that support hippos, crocodiles, and migratory birds. Known for riverboat safaris, especially on the Rufiji River, allowing close-up wildlife encounters in forested river channels.

Coastal Forests

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park
Location: Found on Zanzibar
The park is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, mangrove forests, and numerous bird species, including the rare Fischer's turaco. The diverse ecosystems include forest, swamp, and coastal habitats.

Tanga Coastal Forest
Location: Stretching along the northeastern coast
The forests support a variety of wildlife, including various monkey species, birds, and butterflies, as well as unique plant species that thrive in the coastal environment.

Pangani Mangrove Forest
Location: Pangani District, near the mouth of the Pangani River.
Unique for being a coastal savanna and mangrove ecosystem, it supports species like lions and elephants alongside mangrove species, crabs, and fish nurseries. River safaris on the Wami River, blending beach relaxation with wildlife viewing. The park is the only one in Tanzania where savanna meets the sea.

Sadani National Park Mangroves
Location: Coast Region, near Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam.
The forest is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including endemic primates like the black-and-white colobus monkey, as well as numerous bird species such as the mountain buzzard and various sunbirds.
